Give a Thought to Your Girth

It's great to see so many people taking considerable care over the fit of their saddle and using a Skito Pad or something similar to ensure their horse is comfortable.

But what about the girth? Are you still using the same one you got with the saddle you bought 10 years ago? Or maybe it's the favourite eventing girth from pony club days?

Old style girths are mostly what we call ‘knife edge', in other words they are thin with a thin edge that often cracks easily, especially if the girth is leather or the waffle type neoprene. In the latter type cracks can ap-pear and go unnoticed due to the material. Think about a tight belt against your skin, a tight belt with cracks in the edges, ouch!

These girths also don't allow for expansion or contrac-tion of the rib cage, although most horses can breathe ok, it's not the best feel for them.
